As part of NUI Galway’s ongoing journey to becoming a Mindful University, a day of free Mindfulness classes for students and staff will take place with Tibetan Monk

NUI Galway will host a day of Mindfulness classes for staff and students on Tuesday, 19 January at the Aula Maxima Upper from 8:15 am to 6pm. The event is part of the next steps towards integrating mindfulness into the University’s culture and the importance of mindfulness in higher educational institutions.

  • Staff only: 08:15am-09:00am
  • Staff and Students: 10.45am-11.30am
  • Students only: 12.00pm-12.45pm
  • Students only: 13.15pm-14.00pm
  • Staff only: 17:00pm-18.00pm

Tibetan Buddhist Monk, Gelong Thubten, based at the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery in Dumfriesshire in Scotland, and one of the very popular expert speakers at NUI Galway’s recent Mindful Way Conference, will return to NUI Galway to deliver a day of classes on mindfulness, as part of the University’s ‘Mindful Way’ initiative. The classes are free and open to all University students and staff.

The first class for 2016 will provide a thorough training in mindfulness, with each unit on campus introducing new practices over the programme duration, which will be practiced in between classes. The first session is titled Relaxation and Confidence. This session will focus specifically on learning the mindfulness exercise called ‘body scan’, which is a highly effective relaxation technique. Additionally, Thubten will explore methods for increasing our levels of compassion and confidence, through reflecting on our potential.

Professor Lokesh Joshi, Vice-President for Research at NUI Galway, said: “Our 2015 Mindful Way Conference and Information programmes have set the scene for our 2016 experiential programme.  There has been tremendous interest and engagement from the University Community and we look forward to connecting the well-being of our university community with mindfulness, to enhance the performance of individuals, their various units and ultimately the entire University. We want to ensure that mindfulness is brought into the University with the solid backing of scientific evidence.”
