End of Semester Drama Festival

Theatre students from various courses will present a range of exciting work over the next two weeks beginning on 19 November…

 

Theatre Seats

For the next 2 weeks, theatre students of NUI Galway will be performing work that they have been preparing throughout the semester. There will be 7 shows over the next two weeks, which are all free and all students are welcome. They take place in a number of different locations across campus, and the shows performed will showcase the students’ original and newly devised work.

The details of all the performances were posted by NUI Galway Professor Patrick Lonergan and are as follows:

SITE SPECIFIC /ENSEMBLE AND DEVISING

Tuesday 19 November 11.30 – 12.30
Meet at Bank of Ireland Theatre
MA in Drama
Teacher: Max Hafler

Having spent the term working with physical theatre and evoking the alchemy and skill of working in ensemble, students will show two non-verbal devised pieces inspired by their venue. Meet at the Bank of Ireland theatre and be led elsewhere.

SCENES FROM SPRING AWAKENING BY FRANK WEDEKIND
Tuesday 19 November, 15.00-15.45
Bank of Ireland Theatre,
Second Year BA in Drama/BA Connect in Theatre and Performance.
Teacher: Max Hafler

In this course, ‘Engaging the Play’, students have worked with practical acting techniques and have also included aspects of direction and research in this provocative and thought-provoking play.

THE GUISE IN-BETWEEN
Thursday 21 November, 19.00-21.00
The Cube
2BA Drama, Theatre and Performance and 2BA Connect with Theatre and Performance.
Teacher: Kate Costello

‘Dramaguise’ presents ‘The Guise In between’ on 21 Nov at 7pm in The Cube. This piece has been developed by BA Connect and Drama, Theatre & Performance Students who undertook a module in ‘Devising Theatre’ with Kate Costello this semester.

NEW PLAYWRIGHTS AT NUI GALWAY
Tuesday 26 November, 11.00-13.00
Bank of Ireland Theatre
2BA Drama, Theatre and Performance and 2BA Connect with Theatre and Performance.
Teacher: Ciara O’Dowd

Eighteen first-time playwrights from Second Year BA Connect with Theatre and Performance will present extracts from their plays. From the mundane to the magical, the contemporary to the downright crazy, they have found the drama, humour and emotion in it all. Come and hear these unique and emerging voices.

STORIES OF A CLOUD ON DISCO HILL
Tuesday 26 November, 20.00-21.00.
First Year BA Connect
Bank of Ireland Theatre.
Teacher: Maria Tivnan

Playing with energy and heart, the group will present scenes from Disco Pigs (Enda Walsh), Come and Go (Samuel Beckett), On Raftery’s Hill (Marina Carr), Cloud Nine (Caryl Churchill) and Polaroid Stories (Naomi Iizuka) with interconnecting scenes of music and movement.

MONOLOGUES
Wednesday 27 November, 16.45-17.30
Bank of Ireland Theatre
First Year BA Drama, Theatre and Performance
Teacher: Charlotte McIvor

First year BA drama students present contemporary monologues from Irish, British, Australian and American playwrights including Marina Carr, Tom Murphy, David Rabe, Joanna Murray Smith, Charles Mee and Tracy Letts. Come perform yourself not only as audience member, but as auditioner, as these students present their final monologues under ‘audition conditions.’

SHAKESPEAREAN PERFORMANCE
Thursday 28 November: 16.30-17.30.
Bank of Ireland Theatre
2BA Drama, Theatre and Performance
Teacher: Patrick Lonergan

Second Year Drama students will be presenting scenes from two of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies: Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As we enter an exciting new period in the performance of Shakespeare in Ireland, this represents a unique opportunity to see emerging Irish actors tackling these great plays.”
