Student journalism at the University of Galway is set to be recognised in a new way this year, as SIN formally launches the SIN Awards 2026.
The awards, introduced by the editorial team, aim to celebrate excellence, impact and commitment across the paper: from breaking news and investigations to features, sport, opinion and Irish-language journalism.
For the first time, contributors will have the opportunity to see their work judged not simply by publication, but by its merit, rigour and influence across the academic year.
Among the top honours is Journalist of the Year, recognising sustained excellence and professionalism, alongside Iriseoir na Bliana, which will celebrate outstanding journalism produced through Irish.
Section-spanning awards include Writer of the Year (News & Current Affairs), Writer of the Year (Arts & Culture), and Sports Writer of the Year, while individual pieces will be eligible for categories such as Best News Story, Best Investigation, Best Feature, Best Interview, Best Opinion Piece, and Best Sports Story.
The awards will also acknowledge the often unseen work behind the scenes. Outstanding Commitment to SIN will recognise those who have gone beyond bylines – whether through editing, production, mentoring or simply keeping the paper afloat when deadlines loom. A Newcomer of the Year award will spotlight emerging talent.
Contributors may self-nominate or nominate others. Both individual articles and bodies of work may be submitted, depending on category. Full entry guidelines and deadlines will be released in the coming weeks.
The SIN Awards are intended not just as an end-of-year celebration, but as a marker of standards and a recognition that student journalism, done properly, deserves to be taken seriously.
