Beatles fans received an unexpected treat on Friday morning after images of actors in costume for the upcoming Beatles biopics appeared on postcards scattered across the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The photographs were later released online via the band’s official social media channels.
The ambitious project will be directed by Sam Mendes, known for films including Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015) and American Beauty (1999). Mendes’ creative vision will take the form of four interconnected films, each focusing on the life of one member of the Fab Four.
The cast revealed so far includes Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Saoirse Ronan adds further Irish flair to the ensemble, portraying McCartney’s late wife, Linda.
The newly released images quickly generated online excitement, with fans praising the actors’ striking resemblance to the original band members.
Mescal has already confirmed that he will perform his own singing in the film and has met McCartney on two occasions. “I’ve always loved music, but getting to play one of the great songwriters and frontmen has really lit a fire in terms of personally writing music and engaging with it in a different way,” Mescal said in an interview with British GQ.
The social media post also confirmed a release date for the project, with all four films set to premiere simultaneously on 7 April, 2028. A working title was revealed as The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.
Speaking to The Times, Mendes said:
“As a filmmaker, one is always looking to find new ways to look at the past. The Beatles films we are making now also fall into this category, and here again I felt the same portal to the past has been opened.”
While audiences may have a long wait before the legendary Liverpudlians return to the big screen, the first reveal suggests the group’s story is in safe and considered hands.
