University of Galway has opened applications for its fully funded Hardiman PhD Scholarships, aimed at high-achieving students due to begin doctoral study on 1 September 2026.

The competitive scheme offers a stipend of €25,000 per year, with full tuition fees covered for four years. The university says the programme is designed to attract “dynamic, creative individuals” with a strong appetite for research and a desire to make a meaningful impact through their work.

Open to applicants across all disciplines, the Hardiman Scholarships support full-time structured PhDs and are aligned with the university’s research priorities under its Strategy 2025–2030. These focus areas include Innovation for Health; Creativity, Culture and Society; Sustainable and Resilient Environments, including Earth and Ocean; and Transformative Data and AI.

University of Galway holds an international reputation for research, with a wide network of institutes, centres and global partnerships. Prospective applicants are encouraged to explore potential supervisors and existing PhD projects through the university’s online ‘Find a Supervisor/PhD Project’ portal.

To be eligible, applicants must hold a first-class or upper second-class honours degree, or an equivalent qualification.

The closing date for applications is Friday, 6 February 2026 at 5pm.

Further details and application materials are available via the University of Galway Hardiman Scholarships webpage.
